Anna Chicherova

Anna Vladimirovna Chicherova is a Russian high jumper that is currently No.3 on the world all-time outdoor high jump list. She won a bronze medal in this event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China equaling her personal best at the time of 2.03. Her personal best jump and the Russian national record is 2.07 meters, achieved on her 29th birthday at the Russian track and field championships of 2011. Her best indoors was achieved at the Hochsprung mit Musik meeting in Arnstadt - this puts her in the top ten indoor high jumpers of all time.

Anna Chicherova was born on 22 July 1982 in Yerevan, Soviet Armenia. She started jumping at the age of 7 under her father, who used to be a professional high jumper himself. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992 Chicherova's family moved to Russia - to a small town, Belaya Kalitva, in the Rostov region. There Chicherova went on jumping under Alexei Bondarenko. At 17 Chicherova went to Moscow to enter the Russian Sports Academy and started training with Alexander Fetisov. Her first victory was in 1999 with 1.89 at the World Youth Championships, in Bydgoszcz, Poland. In 2000 she finished 4th at the World Junior Championships (1.85) in Santiago, Chile. However, by the end of 2002, her personal best of 1.92 was only 3cm higher than her best jump in 1999. Chicherova was so upset with making no progress that was seriously thinking of giving up the athletics.

In August 2002 she joined the group of Yevgeny Zagorulko, a Russian high jump coach. The progress she made the next year was tremendous. In just six month Chicherova improved her personal record by 12 cm - from 1.92 to 2.04. On 7 January 2003, at the Christmas Cup in Yekaterinburg, Chicherova jumped a national record 2.04. Her next achievements were the bronze medal from the 2003 World Indoor Championships, in Birmingham ( 1.9), 6th place at 2004 Athens Olympics (1.96), victory at the European Indoor Championships, in Madrid (2.01), shared second place with Italian, Antonieta Di Martino at 2007 World Championships in Osaka, took bronze at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China (2.03), came second at World Championships Berlin, Germany (2.02).

Anna Chicherova was absent for the 2010 season due to pregnancy and had her first child, Nika. She returned to the fields in the top form year after taking a year off and celebrated her 29th birthday with a world leading 2.07 metres in the women's high jump at the Russian National championships in Cheboksary on 22 July 2011. Anna Chicherova is now a part of Russian team and prepares for worlds in South Korea. She is married to Gennadiy Chernovol, a Kazakhstan sprinter.

The latest news in Chicherova's sports career is her high jump gold medal at the world championships in Dsegu. She cleared 6 feet, 8 inches (2 meters and 3 centimeters) to beat two-time defending champion Blanka Vlasic of Croatia. Both athletes cleared the same height, but the Russian obtained the result in fewer attempts.
